Etsy vs Shopify vs Amazon (2026): Fees, Pros and Cons, Which Is Better

Etsy vs Shopify is one of the most common questions new online sellers ask, and Amazon usually joins the debate soon after. The three are often compared as if they were the same kind of thing, but they're not.

Amazon and Etsy are marketplaces. They bring the buyers, and you rent space in their store. Shopify is software for building your own store. You own the shop and the customer relationship, but you have to bring the buyers yourself. That one difference shapes fees, effort and which is better for you. Below, we compare Amazon vs Etsy vs Shopify on all three.

Amazon: maximum reach, maximum competition

Who it suits: products people already search for, private-label brands and sellers who can manage stock at scale.

How selling works: you list products and either ship orders yourself or use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA), where Amazon stores, packs and ships your stock and handles returns.

Pros: enormous buyer trust, fast delivery expectations already set and huge built-in demand.

Cons: intense price competition, strict policies and account-health rules, limited access to customer data and fees that add up quickly. Advertising is optional, but in practice most sellers need it.

Etsy: handmade, vintage and creative niches

Who it suits: handmade products, vintage items, craft supplies and digital downloads such as printables, planners and templates.

Pros: buyers come specifically for unique and personal items, start-up costs are low and good listing SEO inside Etsy can bring steady traffic.

Cons: rules about what you can sell, fees that stack up per order, crowded categories (especially digital products) and limited control over branding and the customer relationship.

Shopify: your own brand and your own data

Who it suits: brands that want full control, repeat customers and a direct relationship with buyers.

Pros: complete control over design and branding, ownership of customer data for email and SMS marketing, flexible apps and the ability to sell across several channels from one dashboard.

Cons: no built-in traffic. Every visitor comes from your own SEO, ads, social media, influencers or email list. It also takes more setup and marketing know-how.

Etsy vs Shopify vs Amazon fees

Fees change often, so treat these as figures at the time of writing and check each official page before you price your products.

Etsy fees

  • Listing fee: $0.20 per listing, which lasts four months or until the item sells.
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% of the item price plus what you charge for shipping and gift wrap.
  • Payment processing: depends on the country of your bank account. For US sellers it's 3% plus $0.25 per order; Etsy's table lists 6.5% plus $0.30 per order for sellers in Pakistan.
  • Offsite Ads: if Etsy's external ads bring the sale, you pay 15% of the order, or 12% once your shop has passed $10,000 in sales in a 365-day period, capped at $100 per order. Smaller shops can opt out.
  • Currency conversion: a 2.5% fee when your listing currency differs from your payout currency.

Amazon fees

  • Selling plan: the Individual plan charges $0.99 per item sold; the Professional plan costs $39.99 a month (figures for Amazon.com).
  • Referral fee: a percentage of each sale, set by category. Most categories fall between 8% and 15%, with a minimum fee (often $0.30) in many categories, and some categories are higher.
  • Extras: media items carry a closing fee, and FBA adds fulfilment and storage fees.

Shopify fees

  • Plan: Basic is currently $25 a month billed monthly, or $19 a month billed yearly. Higher plans cost more.
  • Payments: Shopify Payments isn't available in every country, and Pakistan isn't on the supported list. If you use a third-party payment provider, Shopify adds its own transaction fee (2% on Basic at the time of writing) on top of the provider's charges.
  • Apps and themes: many are free, but paid themes and monthly app subscriptions are common. Too many apps can also slow your store, which our website speed checklist helps you fix.

Etsy vs Shopify fees: which is cheaper?

Etsy's fees grow with every sale, while Shopify's main cost is a fixed monthly plan plus payment fees. At low volume, Etsy is often cheaper to run. As sales grow, Shopify's fixed cost is spread across more orders, but you also pay for the marketing that brings traffic. Comparing Shopify vs Amazon fees or Amazon vs Etsy fees is harder, because Amazon's referral fee depends on category and FBA adds its own costs, so run the numbers for each product.

Side-by-side comparison

  • Traffic: Amazon and Etsy bring buyers; with Shopify, you bring them.
  • Branding control: low on Amazon, moderate on Etsy, full on Shopify.
  • Customer data: limited on Amazon and Etsy; yours on Shopify.
  • Fee model: plan plus referral fees on Amazon; listing, transaction and processing fees on Etsy; monthly plan plus processing on Shopify.
  • Best for: searchable everyday products on Amazon; unique, handmade and digital creative products on Etsy; brands building long-term customer loyalty on Shopify.

Etsy vs Shopify for digital products

Etsy is a natural starting point for printables, planners and templates, because buyers already search there for them. The catch is competition: digital categories are crowded, so strong listing photos and keywords matter.

Shopify can sell digital files through Shopify's own free Digital Products app, and you keep every buyer's email for future launches. You'll need your own traffic, though. Many digital sellers start on Etsy and add a Shopify store once they have a following. Amazon is a weaker fit for most small digital sellers; ebooks, for example, are published through Kindle Direct Publishing rather than an ordinary seller listing.

Etsy vs Shopify for print on demand

Etsy allows print on demand through production partners, as long as the designs are your own and you disclose the production partner on your listings. Shopify connects with print-on-demand services such as Printful, Printify and Gelato through apps, giving you more control over branding and pricing. Amazon has its own print-on-demand programme, Merch on Demand, with a separate sign-up and approval process.

A common path: test designs on Etsy, where buyers are already searching, then build the winning designs into a Shopify brand.

Shopify vs Amazon for dropshipping

Shopify is built with dropshipping in mind: you connect a supplier app, set your prices and own the customer relationship. Amazon allows dropshipping only within its Drop Shipping Policy: you must be the seller of record, packing slips and invoices must not identify a third party, and you remain responsible for returns. Breaking those rules can hurt your account health, so read the policy before you list anything.

Etsy vs Shopify for beginners

For most beginners, Etsy is the easier start: no monthly plan, a simple setup and buyers already on the platform. Amazon has more rules, identity checks and account-health metrics to manage. Shopify is very usable, but it only works if you can bring traffic, so it suits beginners who are comfortable with social media, ads or content.

Selling on Etsy, Shopify or Amazon from Pakistan

  • Amazon: Pakistan was added to Amazon's list of approved seller countries in 2021, so Pakistani sellers can register with their own details. Check Amazon's current registration and verification requirements before you start.
  • Etsy: sellers based in Pakistan must use Etsy Payments through a Payoneer account to receive payouts, and the processing fee for Pakistan is higher than the US rate.
  • Shopify: Shopify Payments isn't available, so you'll use a third-party or local payment gateway, plus cash on delivery for local customers. Our guide to Shopify store setup cost in Pakistan covers gateways, plans and setup budgets.

For Shopify vs Amazon in Pakistan, the decision usually comes down to your market: a Shopify store with local gateways and cash on delivery suits selling within Pakistan, while Amazon gives access to international buyers if your logistics can handle it.

Which is better? How to choose

  • If your product solves a common need and people already search for it, start with Amazon.
  • If your product is unique, handmade, vintage or a creative digital download, start with Etsy.
  • If you're building a brand with repeat buyers, content and a community, build on Shopify.

Many sellers combine platforms: test demand on a marketplace, then launch a Shopify store to build the brand. If you sell in more than one place, sync inventory carefully so you don't oversell.

Before you launch anywhere

  1. Work out your unit economics, including every fee, shipping, packaging, returns and advertising.
  2. Read each platform's current fee page. Fees and policies change often.
  3. Invest in product photos and listing copy. On every platform, they're your salespeople.
  4. Plan customer service: response times, returns and reviews.

Marketplaces rent you customers. Your own store lets you keep them. The best strategy often uses both.

FAQ

Is Etsy or Shopify better for beginners?

Etsy is usually easier for beginners because there's no monthly plan and buyers are already on the platform. Shopify suits beginners who can drive their own traffic through social media, ads or content.

Is Etsy cheaper than Shopify?

At low sales volume, often yes, because Etsy charges mainly per listing and per sale. At higher volume, Shopify's fixed monthly plan can work out cheaper per order, but you also pay for marketing to bring visitors.

Can I sell on Etsy and Shopify at the same time?

Yes. Many sellers use Etsy for discovery and Shopify for their brand and repeat customers. Keep inventory synced across both so you don't sell stock you don't have.

Is Shopify better than Amazon?

Neither is better in every case. Amazon gives you instant access to buyers but less control and more competition. Shopify gives you full control and your own customer data, but you have to bring the traffic.

Can I sell on Amazon, Etsy and Shopify from Pakistan?

Yes, with conditions. Amazon accepts Pakistani sellers, Etsy requires Pakistani sellers to receive payouts through Payoneer, and Shopify works with third-party payment gateways because Shopify Payments isn't available in Pakistan.
